With a 5-under-par 66 on Monday at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts, Mickelson out-dueled the world’s No. 1 ranked player over the final nine holes and claimed a two-shot win. In notching his 32nd career PGA Tour victory, he also regained the No. 2 ranking in the world. Mickelson used the FT-5 Driver to lead the field in total driving and average 310 yards off the tee. He also used the X Hot 3-wood, 3H X Hybrid, 2H FT-Hybrid, X-Forged Irons, X-Tour Wedges, the HX Tour Golf Ball, Callaway Golf Footwear and the Odyssey White Hot XG #9 Putter. "I had a driver I could fall back on," Mickelson said of his FT-5. "I just felt like I knew I was going to get it in play. I missed only two fairways today, and playing from the fairway allows me to not be fighting for pars all the time. So that was a big thing." The three-time major championship winner shot 70-64-68-66 to finish the tournament 16-under-par. He saved his best for the final round, however, when he birdied five of the first ten holes to grab a lead he would never relinquish. Mickelson turned in a solid performance in nearly every facet of the game, finishing among the top 10 in every significant statistical category. His driving distance was good for fourth in the field, and he hit 77 percent of fairways for the week. He tied for sixth in putts per round (26.3) and his 70 percent accuracy with his irons placed him tied for eighth in greens in regulation. He was also perfect for the week in sand saves. "I had a lot of fun, not just today, this whole week," Mickelson said. "I had a lot of fun on the golf course being able to play three rounds with Tiger, a couple with Vijay. I had a great time off the course, too. We went and saw the no-hitter in Fenway Park. How often does that happen? It was a very historic night and a fun week here in Boston that I'll never forget." Fellow Callaway Golf Staff Professional Charles Howell III finished tied for 30th at 4-under-par. He is now 12th in the FedExCup standings. On the LPGA Tour, Callaway Golf Staff Pro Annika Sorenstam came up three shots shy of defending her title at the State Farm Classic in Illinois this weekend. The Swede finished tied for third at 14-under-par. She shot 71-65-71-67. Fellow Callaway Golf Staff Pro Morgan Pressel continued her consistent sophomore campaign with a tie for ninth at 9-under-par. She shot 69-73-71-66. |
